March is Colorectal Cancer Month

Premier Medical Group wants you to know that getting screened is your best bet for protecting yourself!

According to the CDC, the most effective way to reduce your risk of colorectal cancer is to get screened routinely, beginning at age 50.

Colorectal cancers usually begin as precancerous polyps in the colon or rectum. Colorectal cancer screenings can find these polyps so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. In this way, colorectal cancer is prevented.

When Should I Begin to Get Screened?

You should begin screening for colorectal cancer soon after turning 50, then continue getting screened at regular intervals.

You should be tested earlier than 50 or more often if:

  • You or a close relative have had colorectal polyps or colorectal cancer.
  • You have inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn’s disease.
  • You have a genetic syndrome such as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP)External or hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (Lynch syndrome).
    External.

What Else Can I Do to Reduce My Risk?

Diet:

Medical experts often recommend a diet low in animal fats and high in fruits,
vegetables, and whole grains.

Aspirin:

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force found that taking low-dose aspirin can help
prevent cardiovascular disease and colorectal cancer in some adult, depending on age
and risk factors.
