February Is Hot Breakfast Month

What nicer thing can you do for somebody than make them breakfast?
– Anthony Bourdain

Premier Medical Group wants you to start the day off right with a healthy breakfast!

What is your go to meal for breakfast? Bowl of cold cereal? Cold bagel with a smear of cream cheese? Protein bar? Hot Breakfast Month encourages us to break this cycle of coldness and start the day off HOT!

Start your day off right

The next time you rush out the door in the morning without something to eat, consider this: Skipping breakfast can set you up for overeating later in the day. A healthy morning meal, on the other hand, can:

  • give you energy
  • satisfy your appetite
  • set the stage for smart decisions all day long

Aim for a breakfast that combines good carbs and fiber with some protein. Luckily, your options are plenty. Here’s a look at some of our favorite breakfast foods, along with expert tips for making them even healthier.

  1. Oatmeal – Steel-cut oats, which take about 15 minutes to cook, contain more fiber than rolled oats or instant varieties, but any type of oatmeal is a healthy choice.
  2. Greek yogurt – This tangy, creamy yogurt is loaded with calcium and boasts plenty of protein—nearly twice as much as regular yogurt
  3. Wheat germ – A little wheat germ goes a long way. Just two tablespoons provides about 15% of your recommended daily intake of vitamin E and 10% of your daily folate.
  4. Grapefruit – According to one study, eating half a grapefruit before each meal may help you slim down faster, thanks to the fruit’s fat-burning properties and its beneficial effect on blood sugar and insulin levels.
  5. Eggs – These incredible edibles have made quite a comeback in recent years. Once shunned for being high in dietary cholesterol (one yolk contains about 60% of your daily allotment), eggs are now embraced as a healthy source of protein and nutrients like vitamin D.
  6. Coffee -That espresso doesn’t just wake you up. Coffee drinking has been linked to a lower risk of several diseases (such as diabetes and prostate cancer), and it may even help you live longer.

Studies show that eating a healthy breakfast can help give you:

  • A more nutritionally complete diet, higher in nutrients, vitamins and minerals
  • Improved concentration and performance in the classroom or the boardroom
  • More strength and endurance to engage in physical activity
  • Lower cholesterol levels

Eating breakfast is important for everyone, but is especially so for children and adolescents. According to the American Dietetic Association, children who eat breakfast perform better in the classroom and on the playground, with better concentration, problem-solving skills, and eye-hand coordination.
