Bleeding in Pregnancy

Light bleeding or spotting in pregnancy can be COMMON, especially in the first 12 weeks. It may occur after:

  • Sex / intercourse
  • Cervical exam
  • Vaginal ultrasounds 
  • Increased physical activity or exercise

If bleeding is HEAVY OR IS ACCOMPANIED BY PAIN/CRAMPING go to the nearest hospital-based ER.

Nausea / Vomiting 

Feeling nauseated during the first three months of pregnancy is very common and can last longer for some women. 

  • Vitamin B6, 25 mg, 3 times a day and a Unisom at bedtime (take daily)
  • Eat 5-6 small meals a day
  • Try bland foods such as crackers or the BRAT diet; Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast. Try drinks like ginger ale or 7 up
  • Ginger and peppermint can be used as a natural treatment
  • AVOID greasy and spicy foods

If the symptoms become more severe or you are unable to keep fluids down for more than 12 hours, contact our office. 

Constipation 

Constipation is a common complaint which can be related to hormone changes, low fluids, increased iron, or lack of fiber in your diet. 

  • Include whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Take Colace, Miralax, Senokot, Dulcolax, Metamucil or fiber pills
  • If hemorrhoids develop, use Preparation H, Tucks pads/cream or hydrocortisone cream
